Eat for the Season

Eat for the Season

Ever wonder what is in season or why you would want to eat fruits & veggies in peak season? Look no further! Here is the cheat sheet on what to eat in each season. Eating in-season has a couple of benefits.

  1. MONEY! Who loves saving money? Me! When you eat fruits and veggies in-season, you’re getting the best price. Why? Because every pear farmer is producing pears in the winter, high supply means low cost. In-season produce is also more readily available locally. This means lower shipping costs, and an overall lower purchase price for the consumer.

  2. Nutrients. Aside from flash freezing, you’re going to get peak nutritional value in-season because the produce has had the maximum amount of time in the sun to ripen and fully develop.

  3. Deliciousness. Speaking of ripe produce, when you give it maximum time to ripen, you’re also getting maximum flavor. We’ve all had a hard pink tomato. It’s unimpressive and downright gross. On the other hand, a sun-ripened tomato from the garden is tender and full of flavor. I dream about fresh tomato sandwiches in the winter.

  4. Fun. Let’s face it. It’s fun to go to the store and buy pumpkins in October. Ever made your own pumpkin pie filling from a pumpkin pie pumpkin? Try it out! Your friends and family will be super impressed :)
